At Hangar 18, it’s safe to say we conduct as much business over lunch in local restaurants as we do in our boardroom. What follows is a review of some of our local eateries. And because some of them aren’t particularly flattering, we’ve left names out of it.
Efficient Sushi Place.
If you want to grab a quick bite, Efficient Sushi Place delivers. We timed them once on an order of three California rolls, gyoza and tea. Time: 4:28. (5/5) Wow! And the food’s pretty good too: (4/5). Ambiance…not so much: (2/5). Price: (5/5)
Nearby Mexican Place.
It's close, we really like the owner and he always remembers us, but frankly Nearby Mexican Place is a little too hit and miss.
Food: (Varies between 3/5 and 2/5) Friendly factor: (5/5) Price: (4/5). In fairness, we give them a (5/5) for proximity.
Farther Away Mexican Place.
Farther away Mexican place is worth the walk. Food: (4/5) "Arrriba!" factor: (5/5), Price: (3/5), Congeniality: (2/5). Beware of: the automatic gratuity tacked on for larger groups. (Easy to miss after a cerveza or two)
Trendy Fusion Place.
We used to frequent Trendy Fusion Place 1 back when we were in Gastown. And about the time we moved to our current location, they opened up Trendy Fusion Place 2 not far from us. So really, it's been more than seven years now that we've been enjoying their home made bread, pasta and pizzas. Food (5/5), Atmosphere (4/5). One thing: after seven years, you'd think they'd know our names. So, with that in mind...Customer appreciation: (1/5) Nonetheless, if you want a great meal as bad as we want your business, it's got to be Trendy Fusion Place 2.
Bright Perky Trendy Eatery.
"Hey! How are you doing today? EXCELLENT!! Your server will be right with you!
Whereas Trendy Fusion Place doesn't shine in the congeniality department, Bright Perky Trendy Eatery does. Service: (5/5), Food: (5/5), Its own brew: (4/5), Atmosphere: (6/5) Price: (4/5). The only real drawback could be our fault (its proximity to us). If it's your birthday and you like being serenaded, Bright Perky Trendy Eatery is the place to go!
Dark Perky Trendy Eatery.
Not far from Bright Perky Trendy Eatery is Dark Perky Trendy Eatery. With its absence of a lot of light, this place is all about mood and um, perky service. In a Vegas VIP room kind of way. Quite a diverse menu too. Service: (5/5), Food: (5/5), Price: (3/5) Atmosphere: (5/5).
Pizza Place That's Also a Client of Ours.
Now, what would YOU write about your own client's fare? Duh. Food: (6/5), Atmosphere: (6/5), Price: (6/5), Menu Design: (6/5) Television Advertising: (2/5)
Corner Diner.
Have lunch here and you might expect Jerry, Elaine and George to walk in. Frequented mainly by Ferrari sales people and mechanics, Corner Diner is like a bowl of tomato soup on a cold day. Simple and hits the spot. You have to line up cafeteria style, but at least they don't pretend to be something they're not. Speed: (5/5), Corn beef sandwiches: (5/5) Elbow room: (3/5) Wicker furniture: (1/5) Overall: (4/5)
Hot n' Spicy Perky Place.
With reference (mainly) to their selection of sauces, if you like hot, Hot n' Spicy Perky Place is worth a visit. Food: (4/5), Atmosphere: (3/5), Service: (3/5). But what's the deal with that menu design? (1/5)
Needs An Identity Joint.
Close to Farther Away Mexican Place, is Needs An Identity Joint. The food is pretty good, but it doesn't quite know if it's a burger joint, pizza joint or after hours rave club. Chicken Caesar Salad: (5/5), Service: (3/5), Atmosphere: (3/5), People-watching Patio: (5/5).
Needs Sprucing up Place.
We think Needs Sprucing up Place is desperately trying to be like Bright Perky Trendy Eatery - but needs A LOT of work. Not just in the service department (3/5) but in cleanliness (2/5) and decor: (1/5). Kitsch is good if it's meant to be kitsch, but when it's a hangover from when it first opened during Expo 86, it's time to call the producers of "Restaurant Makeover".
